If you enjoyed the first book (which as you’ll see from my review of Church – isn’t for everyone), you should be a bit satisfied with the finale. If you haven’t read Church, I will probably have slight spoilers in my review, so stop now.
Preach opens with Emma in a home for the mentally disabled and even worse – her mother has been appointed her guardian. The last time Emma saw Church, he told her to do whatever she had to in order to convince the staff that she is “normal”, as well as her mother so she can be free. So they can be free together. Emma is at a point where she has visits to the facility for therapy with her doctor as well as group therapy there.
When she doesn’t hear from Church for several weeks, Emma starts to accept that she was just being used by him. Her doctor, whom she has grown to admire to some degree, seems to be making sense to her. Maybe, just maybe she is starting to become a normal person. Until someone points out the pedicure she had gotten. One that suddenly appeared overnight.
What follows is how Emma deals with certain horrible conditions and situations in the facility, as well as Church re-entering her life. Being told by his father that he married Emma’s (horrible, HORRIBLE) mother because Emma was to be a gift from him to his son, Church. This book, at times, is the stuff that your worst dreams are made of. Yet you find yourself rooting for…the bad guys. Emma and Church are far from normal, and far from good…yet their lives are far from the norm as well. How they grew up and were treated by their parents, though differently, is really not normal.
Again – this is not a book for everyone. It is very, very dark. I found myself growing to like(?) our characters a bit more in this, even while being horrified as certain things happen and unfold. It was definitely a book that I could not put down whenever I had the opportunity to pick it up to continue reading. This book is not for anyone faint of heart and contains so many triggers. And you question yourself as you find that you hope these two can do what they want to do to bad people in the world and hope they get away with it.
