Book Review: The Red by Tiffany Reisz

The Red marks international bestseller Tiffany Reisz’s return to the erotica shelves. Originally published as a limited edition hardcover for attendees of Shameless Book Con 2016, The Red — an erotic fantasy in the vein of Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty quartet — will finally being be available to the public this summer.

The Red is the naughtiest, most explicit, sexually decadent book I’ve ever written,” Reisz says. “If you’ve read my other books, you know that’s saying something.”

The heroine, Mona Lisa St. James, makes a deathbed promise that she will do anything to save her mother’s art gallery, The Red. Just as she realizes she has no choice but to sell it, a handsome stranger makes her an offer: He will save The Red if she submits to him for the period of one year.

Reisz adds: “For years readers have been asking me to write The Red, a novel mentioned in the Original Sinners series written by my erotica-writing dominatrix Nora Sutherlin. Well, readers, be careful what you wish for.”

I was lucky enough to purchase a copy of this book at Shameless Book Con in October 2016. 5 out of 5 stars.

What I love so much about Tiffany Reisz novels is that each of them (outside of the series books which are of course, related) are so completely different. The Red is not the Original Sinners, nor is it anything like The Bourbon Thiefor The Night Mark. It is different than anything you’ve probably ever read. It is unique. And that is what makes it awesome and so much worth your time to read.

Mona makes a deathbed promise to her mother to do anything possible to save The Red, an art gallery that has been opened for years and inherited from her mother. The debts are piling up, and just as she is facing facts that she will have to close the doors, a mysterious man named Malcolm appears with an offer. For carte blanche use of her body, he will help her get The Red — out of the red.

What follows is an erotic adventure between Mona and Malcolm which incorporates many famous works of art as Malcolm makes them come to life for Mona. Some of these scenes are not for the faint at heart; luckily — I am not one of those people.

I often find myself lacking in appropriate words to explain my enthusiasm for this author’s work. There is nothing of hers that I have read that I haven’t enjoyed; that hasn’t made me think; that I haven’t marked passages in because certain ones make me think “Oh, this. So much this.” How does she know how to explain so well what I feel?

Again, don’t expect what you have read from her other novels. Open your mind to something completely different and enjoy the ride that these two characters allow you to have with them.
